Learn Aerial Yoga at Home

Perfect for beginners or experienced at flying fitness

There is a range of media available so that you can practice aerial yoga at home. Whether you are a total beginner looking for media that teaches you the basics, a seasoned aerial yogi that’s looking for online classes to follow or a teacher or student looking for manuals that can be kept to hand for inspiration, lesson planning or new moves.

So you discovered Aerial Yoga and now you are in love, you want to do it everywhere from classes at a studio to your back garden to the beach. If you own your own Hammock or Swing you can do just that….but wait….the question on your lips is “How Do I Learn Aerial Yoga at Home?”

Teaching yourself is not a problem because over the last ten years or so aerial yoga has become so popular that there are a plethora of resources out there. Videos, books, DVDs, manuals, online lessons and more. Teacher training courses also exist.

The media you choose to learn from will be partly based on cost and how much you can afford to spend on the art form as well as your learning style.

Learning styles influence what you need to buy

Your learning style influences the way you understand information and solve problems. There are three primary learning styles: visual, auditory and tactile. Many people use a combination of learning styles, whereas others learn best by using just one.

Personally we learn using a visual and auditory, we like to hear and listen to the instructions but we learn much better when this is combined with seeing pictures and videos as well as written down instructions. Then we like to practice as well.

Downloading a manual of moves or buying a book would be our choice for the written down instructions, we then have a reference to hand for the future. We would also like access to a video library or online lessons for the visual information. If we couldn’t stretch to the video library we would buy a DVD. The advantage of the video library is that moves will keep being added or updated. The DVD maybe become quickly outdated unless it is a routine that you can follow each week.

1. Online Lessons / Video Libraries

Online lessons have become a big thing, especially during 2021. The number of providers has increased four-fold. They are the ultimate way to learn  and practice aerial yoga at home. The great thing about them we think is that when you work out with someone on your screen it feels like there is someone in the room with you. No one really likes to work out alone, but there are many benefits to it, but the great thing about using online lessons is that there is plenty of material for you to choose between, the producer updates regularly and having them right in front of you allows them to keep you company. You can watch them, so you can understand what they are saying.  Once you know the moves you can just listen and follow. It’s like being in a real live class but you can learn aerial yoga at home.

We didn’t have space to list all the books on this page so why not take a look at our list of the 10 best aerial yoga and meditation books now by clicking here. However if you want to just grab our favourite, it is called ….. .

Our particular favourite is one simply called Aerial Yoga for Anyone.

3. Manuals

We have come across 2 brilliant downloadable manuals and both look excellent.

The Aerial Yoga Manual by Rebekah Leach – Volume I and II

We have been using the aerial yoga manuals by Rebekah Leach for the last 2 years. She has produced 2 amazing manuals – level 1 and level 2.

There are over 100 moves and progressions, with detailed instructions plus great images.

Rebekah comes from an aerial background as opposed to a traditional mat based yoga, so there may be more trick in these manuals than other sources of information.

Rebekah Leach Aerial Yoga Manual

She brings you a great selection of moves where the hammock is low to the ground for restorative poses, and a huge selection of traditional yoga poses that have been adapted for aerial yoga as well as quite a few tricks.

There are a number of postures that are completed with the student standing in the hammock. If you are looking to progress yoga or are looking for something a bit more than adapted traditional yoga poses.

Take a look at this manual. It’s a one of the leading resources for students and teachers.  If you’re just starting out invest in volume one.

If you are comfortable in a hammock or have been doing aerial yoga for some time take a look at volume 2 as well.

A must have resource for all students and teachers alike.

The first volume also includes a section for pregnant ladies.

The author also runs teacher training sessions in many disciplines, these certifications are approved by the American Circus Educators Association, so you know you are getting information from someone that is approved by a leading body.

Aerial Yoga Manual by Kama TV

Last week we discovered there in another downloadable manual available which is in it’s 5th edition. We are waiting to download a take a look at this before we suggest that you buy it. The author claims to have listed the benefits of each pose and includes aerial yoga flows which is something that the manual by Rebekah misses. Keep watching for more updates.

4. DVDs

Aerial yoga DVDs are great for beginners.

There a few of them available to buy on the internet, however producers are moving away from them and putting the majority of their productions online and making them available as a download. Which to be honest is way better for the environment.

However, if you like to have something physically in front of you to make you do it. If this is your issue then set a reminder on your phone for you to do it or place the icon on your desktop – that way you will see it and remember to do it 🙂

If you are looking for step-by-step instructions you can watch and practice with the DVDs as the narrator walks you through the setup, full postures, and modifications for all body types.

Generally the producers pace the videos so that they are appropriate for all levels. Complex movements are broken down into steps so it make asanas and postures easy for everyone to follow.

5. Other Videos

If you don’t want to pay to learn at home you could write down moves from the live classes you go to or scroll You Tube for videos, which are of course free.

Free videos are great to a point, but most are very small. There are some full lessons out there but you won’t progress very far with them.

For comprehensive lessons via video to use at home we suggest those online videos above by Kama TV.
