Where can I buy a hula hoop in the UK?
For hoop dance or learning tricks, buy from a UK hoop specialist such as HoopSpin, Firetoys or Oddballs. For a weighted fitness hoop, Decathlon and Argos are easy places to pick one up today. Toy shops and bargain stores are fine for children, but their hoops are usually too small and light for adults.

Can I buy a hula hoop on the high street?
Yes, but you’ll mostly find two kinds: weighted fitness hoops and children’s toy hoops. Here’s what the main UK stores sell, and who each one suits.
| High street store | What they sell | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decathlon | 1.4kg weighted fitness hoop: 90cm, foam covered, sections come apart | Fitness, and you can collect it in store | Too heavy for hoop dance tricks |
| Argos | Opti hula hoop and Opti weighted hoop (1.8kg) | Quick click and collect | Heavy; check the size before you buy |
| Tesco | “Smart” weighted hoops with detachable knots | Hands-free waist workouts | Often sold by marketplace sellers, not Tesco |
| Smyths, The Range, Poundstretcher | Children’s toy hoops | Kids and garden play | Too small and light for most adults |
Based on each store’s website, checked October 2026. High street ranges change often, especially in summer, so check stock before you travel.
Are high street hula hoops any good?
They’re good for what they’re made for, but not for learning hoop dance.
Why they can be good
- You can buy one today and take it home
- Easy returns to a local store
- Weighted hoops are fine for simple waist hooping workouts
- Toy hoops are cheap for kids
Why they may not be
- Weighted hoops are too heavy and slow for tricks
- Toy hoops are too small for most adults to keep up
- Little choice of size or tube thickness
- Staff can’t usually help you pick a size
Where can I buy a hula hoop in the USA?
For hoop dance, buy from a US hoop maker such as Hoopnotica, which handmakes hoops in Boulder, Colorado. For weighted fitness hoops, Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods all sell them. As in the UK, big-store hoops are mostly fitness or kids’ hoops rather than dance hoops.
| US shop | What they sell | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoopnotica (part of Hoopologie) | Handmade polypro and HDPE dance hoops, plus beginner and weighted fitness hoops, mostly $38.95 to $49.95 | Learning hoop dance | Allow 3 to 7 business days for your order to be made and sent |
| Walmart | Around 280 hoops online, from kids’ hoops to weighted fitness hoops, about $5 to $57 | Cheap kids’ and fitness hoops | Many are sold by marketplace sellers |
| Dick’s Sporting Goods | Weighted fitness hoops, such as Marcy’s | Fitness | Too heavy for tricks |
| Target | Fitness and kids’ hoops, mostly online | Picking one up with other shopping | Check the size and weight |
| Amazon US | A huge choice of every type | Fast delivery | Check the diameter and tube size |
| Etsy | Handmade hoops from small US makers | Custom colours and sizes | Quality varies from maker to maker |
Based on each store’s website, checked October 2026.
Are “smart” weighted hula hoops worth it?
They’re a workout gadget rather than a real hoop. A weighted ball on a short cord runs around a track that clips round your waist, so you don’t need any hooping skill to keep it going. You add or remove links to fit your waist. They suit people who just want to move their hips while watching TV, but you can’t dance or do tricks with them. See our best weighted hula hoops.
What size hula hoop should an adult buy?
For a beginner, a bigger hoop is easier: roughly as tall as your belly button from the floor. Hoop maker Flowtoys suggests a 36 inch (about 90cm) dance hoop if you’re not sure, with 3/4 inch (19mm) tubing for beginners because it moves more slowly and is easier to control. As you improve, you can go smaller and lighter. HoopSpin also has a free hoop size guide and can resize hoops.
What’s the difference between polypro, HDPE and weighted hoops?
- Polypro: light, springy plastic tubing. The favourite for hoop dance and tricks once you’re past the basics.
- HDPE: a slightly heavier, more forgiving plastic, often used for beginner and travel hoops.
- Weighted: padded fitness hoops, usually 1 to 2kg. Easy to keep spinning on your waist, but too heavy for tricks.

Can I try a hula hoop before I buy?
Sometimes. Oddballs has shops in London and Brighton, and Decathlon and Argos let you collect in store. Many hoop classes and hoop jams also let you try different hoops before you buy your own.

Buying a hula hoop: FAQs
Where can I buy a hula hoop in the UK?
For hoop dance, buy from a UK hoop specialist such as HoopSpin, Firetoys or Oddballs. For a weighted fitness hoop, Decathlon and Argos sell them and let you collect in store.
Can I buy a hula hoop in Argos or Decathlon?
Yes. Argos sells Opti hula hoops, including a 1.8kg weighted hoop, and Decathlon sells a 1.4kg, 90cm weighted fitness hoop. Both are fitness hoops rather than dance hoops.
Are cheap hula hoops from toy shops OK for adults?
Usually not. Children’s toy hoops are small and light, so most adults find them hard to keep up. Adults learning to hoop do better with a bigger hoop, around 90cm.
What size hula hoop should a beginner adult buy?
Roughly the height from the floor to your belly button. If you’re not sure, a 36 inch (about 90cm) hoop with 3/4 inch tubing is a safe start.
Is a weighted hula hoop better than a normal one?
Only for simple waist workouts. Weighted hoops are easier to keep spinning, but they’re too heavy for tricks or hoop dance.
Where can I buy a hula hoop in the USA?
For hoop dance, try US hoop maker Hoopnotica in Boulder, Colorado. Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods sell weighted fitness and kids’ hoops, and Amazon and Etsy have a wide choice.
